Coach's Corner - 12/21/12

Looks like we may have to put "The End" on hold and pony up

Well if you believe the Mayans (or at least all those that talk about the Mayans) this will be my last message and I wish you the best of health.

As simple as that would sound to just have everything just end, most likely life will continue to go on and we will continue to have decisions to make that shape our future. So salute to the future and 2013 and making choices that continue to reverse the negative trends in our lives. It is not all about fitness & nutrition either. For the later part of last year I had been reading the book & workbook called "Love & Respect" by Emerson Eggerichs. It has been a slow work and I have much to work on. So now with the world going on I hope to continue to strive to be the best husband I can. While it has been a challenge to push myself thought P90X, Insanity, etc., changing the character of my soul seems to be the biggest challenge. So no matter your test and trials, I pray that you can face them as I press through my own.

Plants are treating us well

Our family continues to enjoy a mainly plant-based diet and even with working hard at our fitness routines, we are feeling really good. Tammy is still amazed that she has been holding her post Ultimate Reset physique. Honestly, even before birthing 4 babies she was not as lean, toned and strong as she is now. She is a great role-model and I hope that her knowledge and enthusiasm will help many. We do feel a bit "nuts" sometimes applying all that we have learned about our nutrition, but really we are not crazy people.

Chocolate Shakeology revamp, take two.

This July when the whey-protein based Chocolate Shakeology was changed to a more robust Super-Food formulation, many were upset. Even more so, after Carl (Beachbody CEO) Blogged I Challenge Your Tongue To A Duel!. Carl is one of the most passionate men I know about wanting to create healthy products, so I could understand him wanting people to "stick" with it for the health reasons. But alas, it did not taste at all the same. It was still better than everything else on the market, and it did "grow" on us. We started using the Choc. Vegan Formula and the Tropical Strawberry, so we were fine. Carl wanted to listen to the many that voiced disgust. Therefore, a "Shakeology Tasting Panel" was created with a variety of coaches and customers. I was on the panel and Beachbody did a great job listening and made chocolate Shakeology taste (in Tammy and my opinion) better than anything before, while retaining all  the new superfood additions. It is shipping now and we look forward to tasting the "Customer Approved" formula.

About the Family

Winter is here and it is snowing as I type. It has been great ski coaching again this year at a local resort. We have already had many days skiing together as a family. This is only year two of skiing for our children and they are doing so well. It is nice to have this winter activity. We have been enjoying hot cocoa, cider and Tammy's excellent toffee. We also enjoyed cutting our own Christmas tree again this year. Tammy and I wish you a Merry CHRISTmas and hope for a continued friendship in the new year.
P.S. - I have told so many of you that are doing Insanity that Tammy and I were in the Infomercial. Well here is a Clip of our 4-seconds of fame. (at 0:14 to 0:15 & 1:15 to 1:16.) Insanity Video - Jay and Tammy

Wishing Darin Olien was more than a Facebook Friend

Trying not to sound like a Stalker, but it would be great to be super good friends with Darin Olien. When ever I hear him speak or rear anything he wrote, I think,"Man it would great to have dinner with this guy and just chat for hours. I so appreciate his passion for life. With that I wanted to share a post from the Shakeology.com Blog Page

"Why I Created Shakeology"
by Darin Olien

I started formulating Shakeology with some questions. I asked myself many questions such as: "What do most bodies require in this day and age?", "What is not being delivered in food today (even good, organic food)?", "What are the gaps in nutrition that need to be filled for the majority of people?", "What's lacking from the food we eat?"
Darin Olien
The fact is, these days our food is lacking all sorts of nutrients. The nutrient density of our food has continued to plummet as the value of money has trumped the value of quality. It is insane, but true!
The facts are well documented. Pushing farm production has depleted soils. Crops of non-nutritive foods have replaced nutrition-dense foods. Pesticides and genetic modification is wreaking havoc. We're basically putting more food into the pipeline which has less of what we need and more of what we don't need; on a biological level, your body hardly recognizes some of the food you are swallowing.
So ask yourself, how do you expect your body to live tirelessly, vibrantly, with the power to defend itself from disease if what is being fed to it is like putting dirty gas in the tank of a Ferrari?
Darin Olien
Shakeology is the equivalent of a super-charged multi-vitamin and protein-rich health smoothie. When choosing what ingredients were to make up Shakeology, my main deciding factor was the level of every body's' need for vital ingredients that most likely are missing from the average diet. They are as follows:
  • 1. Whole Foods: So many supplements on the market are just fragmentations of the complete matrix of real food. Think of it like taking the most popular scene from a two hour movie and calling that the movie. It's incomplete without the character development, plot, and nuance that make it a holistic experience. The same goes with food. On a biological level, your body needs the whole "movie" to get the complete benefit of the vitamin or mineral that is the star. You just cannot replace or re-engineer the incredible balance and creation of whole foods. So we selected high quality, potent foods, herbs, grasses and ingredients, and processed them minimally to preserve the integrity, phytochemicals, natural vitamins, minerals, alkaloids, phytosterols, etc.
  • 2. Vitamins and Minerals: We included quality nutrition from potent and varying whole-food sources. ("Nutrition, right off the vine" as I like to call it) And then we backed that up by adding in a well-balanced vitamin and mineral profile since whole-foods fluctuate from crop to crop.
  • 3. Enzymes: Since enzymes flood the food only in the last days of ripening, enzyme supplementation is critical for the majority of people. Even if you eat all raw foods the enzymes are still low. And cooked food has ZERO active enzymes! A very quick note…why Enzymes? They have been called "The Fountain of Life!" They are behind EVERY single process in the body! Yes, EVERTHING requires enzymes! The labor force of the body that digests, absorbs, allow for signals to be sent, creates new blood cells, etc are all governed by enzymes. You would be shocked at how starved your body has been for enzyme support. That's why the addition of these vital forces to Shakeology was so critical!
  • 4. Prebiotics and Probiotics: We've all heard about foods with additive probiotics, like yogurts for instance. Did you know that your body can actually manifest its own probiotics if you feed it prebiotics? With the way people eat today they have created thriving environments for unhealthy bacteria in the body. This has created all sorts of debilitating breakdowns and is the foundation for physical and emotional fatigue. The prebiotics of the amazing Yacon Root in Shakeology is food for the "healthy" bacteria, and in turn, it creates an environment for healthy probiotics to flourish. By getting our internal 'ecosystem' in balance, you have the potential for a vibrant, thriving body and life!
  • 5. MSM- (Methylsulfonylmethane): MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in fresh, raw fruits, vegetables, milk, fish, and grains. But within hours of harvest, MSM changes and is virtually gone. That's why it is very difficult to get MSM naturally, because where ancient man ate what he picked almost instantly, today it is picked, processed and packaged months before it hits the table. Why is it important? MSM is critical to the connective tissue and the fluidity (or space) between cells! MSM gives them "room to breathe". When the body becomes very ridged, tight, painful and stiff, often times MSM is at very low quantities in the body. Since we are not eating our own foods immediately after harvesting we must supplement this vital component or the body has a hard time staying healthy and flexible on a cellular level, which translates throughout the body on a bio-mechanical level as well.
If we want our health to improve, we need to be aware so we can choose differently! So this is why I created Shakeology- it's my intention to fulfill the deep desire of EVERY body's need to be fed more nutrition.

To that I (Jay) say, Thanks "Buddy" keep up the good work!

Coach's Corner 11/21/12

.

Happy to be a Part of Something Worthy

Tammy and I have been doing well with our workouts, even after 3-weeks off in October. It is always more difficult to make the commitment to get up early and push ourselves, but after a week or two in, it feels so energizing. While I am pressing play consistently, I still wish I was more helpful to you. I want to be available for you and I hope that any communication we have will be an encouragement to both of us. I want to be like the First Responder that Carl (C.E.O of Beachbody) spoke of at our Coach Summit.

Richard Neal Is On A Mission To Rescue Tennessee From Obesity

It may sound like a stretch comparing ourselves to the brave and courageous men and women that literally save lives everyday, but it is very close to the truth. It is not a house on fire that is going up quickly, but it is the gradual decay of inactivity and obesity that is taking lives. If not death itself, it is taking away the quality of life of many around us that we love. I often have so much I want to share, but honestly I am overwhelmed with taking the steps to share. I am excited to be a part in many of your lives and have enjoyed the conversations, they have truly blessed me.

Inside Training for an Outside World

Inside training - Starting Oct. 29 Tammy and I set out to work through most of the DVD workouts we own. We went through  P90X with Insanity for Cardio and just finished P90X Plus. We are doing Yoga once a week with either Yoga X (the first 48 min), Fountain of Youth or Yoga: MC2. I really enjoy Tony’s yoga routines, except the ohms at the end (MC2). Sorry Tony, I love ya, but just not into the “making noise in my house”. Future plans are to go through Insanity: Asylum, then possibly a P90X / Turbo Fire Hybrid. We hope to do rounds of P90X2 and Les Mills PUMP in 2013.

Outside World - We had some great backpacking, hiking and family bike rides this summer, and now we are heading into winter. We got the whole family up skiing last Tuesday. It was a bit warm still, but it reminded me of the great times we had last year and the good-times to come.

Our Reset Experience

Just like how P90X, in 2007, was so instrumental in setting me on a stronger and healthier path, the Ultimate Reset may prove to also have life altering changes in my family's health. Not everyone that completes the Reset has a “food identity crisis”, but Tammy and I have really taken to heart what we learned through it and continue to discuss what role food (and different types of food) plays in our lives. For now each 6th week we are going to mostly stretch/rest and follow a complete 7 days in the 21-Day Reset meal plan.

Coach's Corner 9/18/12

Got to get the proper mouth position......I think she's getting it.

P90X - for the Mobile folks.
Ever thought about having P90X on your Mobile device?
You can now get the P90X mobile App for FREE! it comes loaded with the AB Ripper X routine.
Go to www.beachbodycoach.com/jay21
(If you do not have a Free Teambeachbody account yet, click on "Join" first.) then...
click on the "P90X App for iPhone" banner.
Using the App you sign into your existing Teambeachbody.com account.

*Confession* - I do not have an I-phone or an Android. Still cruising around with an old Palm Centro phone, which is a good PDA but I do not carry a data package. I did down load the Free App though, for when I get into the Future.

Make Little or Big Steps, but move forward.
I was just out mowing the lawn and was presented withthe aroma of someone BBQ'n. I do not know what was on the grill, but it reminded me of the Reno Rib Cook-off. While Tammy and I have not been in a few years, we had always looked forward to it. As we set out to do the Ultimate Reset, I wondered if upon finishing we will desire still to have some finger licking pork ribs. I don't know, but I do know that we enjoy life and enjoy food. I also know that over the past four-five years we have made changes to our nutition that in a whole add up to significant changes. It has been all about learning more and really about changes in moderation. In all the changes we have made we have not felt depriveed of enjoyment, but have actually become to even enjoy our nutrition more. So we will see what comes of it. So I hope you are also making positive changes in your fitness and nutrition, whether large or small. Itf you are ready to jump start some of those larger changes, I welcome you to join us in the Reset. It would be great to have a group of people along for the Journey encouraging each other along. Message me back if you are interested in being part of our "Reset Accountability" group. We are planning on starting the Reset on October 1st.

It isn't a trip to Crater Lake if you don't Jump in.

Little Emry wants to go too . Not expecting a 10-yr old to jump 20+ feet.

She did it ... we could not believe it.

Coach’s Corner 9/11/12

First off most of you may not know that have the “Follow the Bright light” disease. And oh there are often so many bright shinny things around. I really am often paralyzed wondering if I should fish or cut bait. And most often try to juggle all things and get nothing complete. As I type I think I may complete this post this time. Focus, Jay.

Doing P90X in “Lego City”
As Tammy and I prepare for the Tough Mudder (Check out the Obstacles) on Sept. 23, we have been doing P90X and are on week 7. The first 6-weeks our oldest son had built a Lego City over about half the floor area where we workout. It was a great design, but it was growing. It was removed last week and he is happily on to new adventures. While it is nice to have the space back it does not make P90X any easier, yet with all the Pull-ups and strength work it will pay off in the Mudder. Just yesterday we purchased some fingerless gloves and some water-wicking clothing. We hope to maybe have a friend take some pictures.

Nutrition –
Processed; how much is too much
Saw a friend post about Butter being better than Margarine. I was hoping that by now this was pretty well known, but many are still buying what I call Franken-foods that man has made to "Substitute" for the less processed foods that are from days of old. Although we wish we could churn our own, most butter in moderation is way better than over processed substitutes.
I have also been thinking more on the heavily processed Canola Oil. There are many urban legends about its dangers, but all in all it looks much too "factory made" for me (see How It's Made - Canola Oil). I am weary to eat something that is produced by means of Solvents & Bleaching agents.
Researching diet and getting our nutrients from whole Foods – great story of Dr. Terry Wahls learned how to properly fuel her body. Using the lessons she learned at the subcellular level, she used diet to cure her MS and get out of her wheelchair. TEDxIowaCity - Dr. Terry Wahls - Minding Your Mitochondria. Most Americans eat more than enough calories, but we are starving of basic nutrients.

So much information, what do we do?
Heading down the path of nutritional information can be daunting and depressing. We all have time to learn, but it is hard to “make” the time; even with the above link about “Minding Your Mitochondria”, were do we get 17-minutes.So do I overwhelm you? Hope you can find some of it interesting. I do want to share a Univ. of CA (UCTV) series called The Skinny on Obesity. There seems to be 7-episodes (about 7-12 minutes each). Here is a link to The Skinny on Obesity (Ep. 1): An Epidemic for Every Body. I’ll wait until next time to share info about 12 great food documentaries.

Kitchen: Always room for improvement (And I do not mean needing a new sink and Cabinets)
While our family does not have the average American diet, and we eat “healthily” we are excited to see what we can learn about our nutrition as we go through the 21-day Ultimate Reset. The reset is designed to balance body chemistry, remove toxins & reset digestion. It will comprise of learning new recipes (DVD cooking class), where the last week it is Vegan and consuming Supplements of:
Alkalinize - A super-green mixture that helps maintain body alkalinity, bringing your body back to a healthy pH balance.
Optimize - systemic enzymes and added camu camu that promotes an optimal immune system and helps manage your body's natural inflammatory response.
Detox – exclusive blend of organic sources designed to gently soothe and detoxify your colon—without forcing your body/bowels into a release.
Revitalize - pro- and pre-biotics, helping your body maintain the right environment for healthy intestinal flora.
Oxygenize – Stabilized Oxygen to help your body detoxify and develop a strong immune system.

Drinking a lot of Distilled water with Mineralize (Himalayan Salt, which contains up to 84 essential minerals and trace elements) added in.

It is may be just what many need. A lot of information at www.myultimatereset.com/jay21

P.S. - Yes, I made it through the post with out getting distracted!

Coach's Corner 7/17/12

It is now over two weeks since the last (and first) “Weekly” Coaches Corner update. So you set out to do something that you think is important and trip up in the very beginning. A couple options, quit and move on or start again and forget the past (or learn from it).

After the last post we came back from the Team Beachbody Summit and we had our first born daughter's 10th Birthday on the 4th of July and the town parade. I then did an “all-nighter” working on a Engineering Project with my 45th Birthday that next day on July 5th. It was a busy week planning and getting everything in order before Tammy and I set out for a 5-day backpacking (our first) trip. Thanks to Mike & Shirley for watching the children while Tammy and I had a beautiful trip. I see backpacking in our whole family's future. If you are my facebook friend, https://www.facebook.com/jaybbcoach, you can see me tagged in some pictures of the trip.

I know it doesn't look possible but those are the Mountains we hiked in.

God's creation.
Tammy's Daybook Blog about the Trip

Workouts last week were only P90 sculpt, P90X Cardio X & Fountain of Youth Yoga. Probably a good break going into packing 40 lbs though the Sierra-Nevada. Now back, we have done two days of Stretching. We were so wrong to have not spent time stretching on the trip. We are still unsure of the routine that we are going to do this summer. We will be working on the upper body and Pull-ups to prepare for the Tough Mudder on Sept. 23rd. Then at the end of September we will start the 21-Day Ultimate Reset and Vlog about our experience. Here is a current video testimony about the Reset. It should be interesting.

I am hoping to submit my Story to Team Beachbody to win one of the monthly $1000 for my age group. I am happy to be 45 and still Reversing the Trend.

Last note is for those interested getting in a 30-day challenge group focusing on both fitness and nutrition .  The 30-day challenge is a fitness program of your choice and using Shakeology as a meal replacement and to fuel our bodies. Until the end of July,  I can even offer a Trial offer on P90X, TurboFire or Brazil Butt Lift with the Shakeology flavor of your choice. The trial cost is $14.95 + tax on the workout program and shake. You are billed after 30-days if you do not return it.

We took Shakeology with us as one of our main meals.

Have a great week!

Coach's Corner - 6/29/12

Happy Friday to all, I hope to give a weekly summary of my week every Friday so here goes.
Tammy and I spent last weekend at the Team Beachbody Coach Summit (Recap of top news below). While Vegas has some less desirable characteristics, it was a great time to be alone with Tammy learning how we can better ourselves, better our marriage and hopefully better learn how to help others. (Thanks Mom for watching the children for us, it was a great undertaking and we appreciate it). Goals from the conference include: learning how to make myself more available to you, sharing my family life and encourage you in making yourself the best you can for your family (or future family). Video of Tammy with Dessert at Bellagio Buffet

It has been a whirl wind of responsibilities since returning home. Our hopes to be better parents is being tested every day as we let the pressures of “life” with four little ones dives us to Reacting instead of Listening. We have work to do. We have had relaxed mornings this week since we have not set out our next workout schedule and have taken the week off. It will be nice to get back into the morning workouts, but as many know it is often difficult to “get the ball rolling again.”
Other weeks activities include all four children at Vacation Bible School. Our church, Calvary Chapel, is doing a great job this year. My Residential Engineering work has me busy, which although demanding is welcomed in this economy. Also trying to learn more about posting video to my Blog and Tammy has scheduled my time on Cozi Calendar program. I am looking forward to staying in touch and to even answering your questions here each week. Have a great weekend.

P.S. – Top Beachbody News from the Coach Summit:
* Chocolate Vegan Shakeology now available
* Offering a trial offer of $14.95 + Tax on the P90X, TurboFire & Brazil Butt Lift Challenge Packs (Shakeology + Fitness Program) through July 31st
* Chocolate Shakeology (Whey based formula) changing to SuperFood Formula with addition of Moringa, Coconut Flower Nectar, Luo Han Guo And Himalayan Salt.
* LES MILLS Body Combat (Coming soon)
* INSANITY: The ASYLUM, Vol. 2 (Coming Soon) Tammy enjoyed seeing her #2 heartthrob Apolo Anton Ohno promoting ASYLUM.

Coach Summit 2012

Been back a few days now from the Team Beachbody Coach Summit. While Las Vegas is still not one of my favorite places, the Coach conference was excellent. Tammy and I look forward to learning more about ourselves and how we can help others, specifically families, live more active and healthy lives.
Still Cropping our Recap of the Summit video to fit on the Blog, but until then here are some highlights.

Carl's Bucket List:

Carl Daikeler (CEO of Beachbody) started one of the General Sessions Shooting T-Shirts into the Crowd. He joked (or not) that shooting shits from a T-shirt Launched was on his "To Do Bucket list". Right after he commented that he should have thought with more detail about shooting Black T-shirts into a dark room at high speed, but it all worked out. We have great leadership with Beachbody, which also means that they do not take themselves too serious. (Carl later along with 3 others was dressed as Elvis.)

New Energy and Endurance Drink

Tammy and I are just in our second week of P90X2, which is the Foundation Phase (3 to 4 week Phases). The Phase 2 is Strength and Phase 3 is Performance. For now we are not using a Pre-workout Drink, but come Phase 2 and especially Phase 3 we will be trying the new Energy and Endurance. I like that it does not have Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate or ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate.

Energy and Endurance contains: No artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. And No high-risk or untested ingredients.

If you want often perform intense exercise like long runs or Cross-country skiing (when the snow finally flies) you may want to give it a try. Once we are Bringing it hard to Phase 2 & 3 of P90X2 I will trying it and reporting my thoughts. Like all the products it is a 30-day money back guarantee.

P.S. - information on Anhydrous caffeine :

Anhydrous Caffeine
Anhydrous caffeine is simply dehydrated caffeine -- anhydrous means "without water." It is available in pill or tablet form, or as a soluble powder. Anhydrous caffeine is found in a number of non-prescription medications such as Vivarin and No-Doze. According to Drugs.com, these medications contain 200 mg of anhydrous caffeine per tablet. A cup of coffee may contain 40 mg to 180 mg, depending on how it is brewed. Tea varies from 20 mg to 90 mg per 8 oz. cup. Cola and other soft drinks contain 36 mg to 90 mg in 12 oz., and bittersweet chocolate has 25 mg of caffeine per ounce.

It's The Same Thing
Although anhydrous caffeine may be more convenient than coffee or other forms of caffeinated beverages since it can be carried in a purse, suitcase or pocket, there is no difference chemically between anhydrous and regular caffeine. Anhydrous caffeine does provide a standard dose; brewed drinks can vary according to the amount of water used, brewing time or method.

Considerations and Warnings
Caffeine is generally recognized as safe when consumed in moderate amounts; in large doses it can cause sleeplessness. Drugs.com recommends women who are pregnant should limit caffeine intake to 300 mg or three cups of coffee a day due to the risk of miscarriage and because it may limit growth of the fetus. Women who are breastfeeding should also limit caffeine intake to one or two cups a day and should avoid taking over-the-counter caffeine medications due to the possible effect on the baby.

As always, to your Health
Jay
