Drinks: Recovery, Protein and Shakeology

For Pre-Workout Drink see New Energy and Endurance Drink

Recovery drinks, protein shakes, and Shakeology are all intended to serve different functions, and wouldn't ideally be used interchangeably.

Recovery drinks are simple-sugar based, and have (relatively) small amounts of fast-absorbing protein (like whey), typically in a ratio between 2:1 and 5:1 of carbs:protein. The P90X Results and Recovery Formula has a 4:1 ratio. They are intended to be taken after intense workouts (within 20 minutes), when the cells of the body are expanded and primed for nutrient replenishment. The simple sugars rush in and replenish your depleted glycogen stores, and also help to carry the protein where it needs to go to begin muscle synthesis. The only time you want to take this amount of simple sugar is immediately following an exhausting workout, when your body's fat storage protocol is in temporary shutdown. One other I have tried Endurox R4 Recovery Drink Mix.

Protein shakes are typically low in carbs and fat, and are intended to add supplemental protein to your diet. While some people use them immediately following workouts, recent research shows that this may not be the ideal application. Too much protein (i.e. upwards of 20 grams, which most protein shakes have) will slow the body's absorption of the nutrients, causing you to miss the 30-45 minute replenishment window that your body has post-workout. If you want to take a shake to up your protein intake during the day, by all means do so, I would just shift it from immediately post-workout to later in the day. We purchase our Naturally sweetened Whey Protein from Vitacost (here is my Refer a Friend Link to give you $10 off your order)

Shakeology is also supplemental in nature, as it's intended to add phytonutrients (plant concentrates) to your diet to increase the amount of vital nutrients you get from fruits and veggies.
It is not designed to be for post-workout, as it has a good amount of fiber and is relatively high in protein, both of which will slow absorption (just like a protein shake would). Look to Spotlighting some of the 70 ingredients in Shakeology for a more information. The Shakeology ingredients that target good digestive health are Flax seed meal, Schisandra Powder, Yacon Root and Chlorella (See Special Spot light on Chlorella ). Acai berry - (ah-sigh-ee) - What makes Acai such a special and unusual berry is that it not only has a high level of antioxidants but also has healthy fatty acids, protein and dietary fiber. Its unsaturated healthy fats have a fatty acid ratio similar to olive oil which is considered to be a contributing factor to the low incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean populations. Açaí pulp contains omega 6 and 9 fatty acids.

Acerola powder (fruit) -Acerola can be found throughout northeastern Brazil and is rich in Vitamin C and carotenoids, and one of the richest known natural sources of vitamin C.

Amaranth - Not only is Amaranth a great source of vitamins and amino acids, but it's also high in protein, fiber and helps to boost your immune system. Additionally, Amaranth has three times the calcium of milk.

Amylase. This is group of enzymes' function is to breakdown sugar and starch. Amylase digests carbohydrates units, eventually converting them into sugar. Amylase also works as an anti-inflammatory.

Apple pectin powder - Apple pectin is a water-soluble fiber, helpful in removing cholesterol out of the intestines and delaying glucose absorption.

Ashwagandha powder - An Adaptogen herb for the mind that promotes clarity. Betterments include: improving mental acuity, learning and memory while also alleviating anxiety and depression.

Astragalus powder root - This ingredient is always helpful for a family like ours with 4 small children because it is an adaptogen that strengthens the immune system increasing both energy levels and vitality. Used in China for 1000s of years, this powder helps prevent colds, upper respiratory infections and helps to lower blood sugar + blood pressure.

Bilberry powder (fruit) -An antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic agent, this fruit has shown to improve vision and symptoms associated with diabetes.

Blueberry Powder - 1st off, it takes 10lbs of fresh blueberries to get 1lb of pure blueberry powder. A good source of vitamins and dietary fiber, blueberries are believed to help reduce eyestrain and improve night vision. Blueberries are also high in the phytochemical resveratrol, which has been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Camu-Camu Powder (Myrciaria dubia) - A bush, native to the South American rainforest, which grows in the black water rivers of the Amazon. Its small, purplish red fruits are a rich source of antioxidants and powerful phytochemicals that support and enhance health. Camu-Camu fruits contain more vitamin C than any other plant in the world from 30 to 60 times more than an orange. They also contain amino acids including serine, valine, and leucine; and significant levels of beta carotene, calcium, iron, niacin, phosphorus, riboflavin, and thiamin. The phytochemicals in Camu-Camu are highly effective in curbing the effects of the herpes virus; in fact, on a list of plants with anti-herpetic compounds, Camu-Camu takes the highest honors as most potent. It is effective against depression, and has even been used to wean users off dangerous anti-depressive medications (under medical supervision, of course.) Alternative medical practitioners have also been using it to combat attention deficit disorder. Camu-Camu also provides immune system support, helps maintain good eyesight, reduces inflammation, supports collagen, tendons, and ligaments. Helps fend off viral infection, improves respiratory health and maintain clarity of mind during stress.

Chia Seed Meal - Coined as the Aztec running food, Chia seeds enhance stamina, endurance and help you stay hydrated. The seeds help you lose weight for 2 reasons. 1st, they are so filling that you will eat less. 2nd, they form into a gel and cleanse the old "junk" in your intestines. Lastly, they provide calcium & protein in your tissues & help regenerate body tissue. Known as the running food, it’s used as a high energy endurance food and has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. It has about 3-10 times the oil concentrations of most grains and one and a half to two times the protein concentrations of other grains. Rich in omega 3, omega 6, protein, fiber and essential trace minerals. (Mexico)

Chlorella - (spotlight on Chlorella) Containing the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll A and B, enabling it to photosynthesize (derive energy by converting sunlight and carbon dioxide into sugar molecules for food). Chlorella is also a complete protein, meaning that it contains all the essential amino acids a person needs to survive in the correct proportions for cellular use. Under certain growing conditions, Chlorella also yields oils high in polyunsaturated fats, which are the healthy variety of lipids (also known as ‘good fats’) and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower blood cholesterol. Chlorella’s presence in the stomach and digestive tract can increase good bacteria in the intestine in order to help treat ulcers, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and diverticulosis.

Citrus bioflavonoids - Extracted from fruits, bioflavonoids are widely used in Europe to treat diseases of the blood vessels and lymph system.

Cordyceps - A type of Asian fungus (mushroom) that may have beneficial properties for bone marrow and kidneys, while it increases stamina, protects against free radicals and restores energy.

Flax Seed Meal - Flaxseeds' omega-3 fats are a good source of fiber that can help lower cholesterol levels, aid in digestion and help stabilize blood sugar levels. Also, its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it great for weight loss. The flax seed carries one of the biggest nutrient payloads on the planet. And while it’s not technically a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains. Flax is high in B vitamins, magnesium, manganese, omega 3, fiber, and our best source of lignans which may promote fertility, reduce peri-menopausal symptoms, and possibly help prevent breast cancer. In addition, lignans may help prevent Type 2 diabetes.

Gingko powder (leaf) - The oldest living species of plant on earth, gingko has been used in Chinese medicine to stimulate the blood circulation and have a tonic effect on the brain, reducing lethargy, improving memory and giving an improved sense of well-being.

Goji Berries (Lycium powder) - These berries contain 18 amino acids and are one of the richest sources of carotenoids, phytochemicals that act as antioxidants, of all known foods. Not only does Goji berry improve eyesight, fertility and circulation but it supports your immune system and promotes a long life. Dubbed as a natural anti-aging food, goji is used to treat hepatitis B (because of the physalin produced by the berries), heart and blood pressure conditions, as a memory enhancer, a treatment for breast and cervical cancer, an anti-inflammatory, and an antifungal, antibacterial.

Grape Seed Extract - they are derivatives from whole grape seeds that have a great concentration of vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid, and OPCs. A polyphenol contained in grape seeds is resveratrol which may interfere with cancer cell growth and proliferation, as well as induce apoptosis, among a variety of potential chemo preventive effects. Preliminary research shows that grape seed extract may have other possible anti-disease properties, such as in laboratory models of:
  • Wound healing—grape seed proanthocyanidins induced vascular endothelial growth factor and accelerated healing of injured skin in mice.
  • Tooth decay --seed phenolics may inhibit oral sugar metabolism and retard growth of certain bacteria causing dental caries.
  • Osteoporosis -- grape seed extracts enhanced bone density and strength in experimental animals.
  • Skin cancer -- grape seed proanthocyanidins decreased tumor numbers and reduced the malignancy of papillomas.
  • Ultraviolet damage to skin—dietary proanthocyanidins may protect against carcinogenesis and provide supplementation for sunscreen protection.

Green tea decaffeinated extract (leaf, 50% polyphenols) - Green tea has important antioxidants and compounds. Studies reveal an impact on heart disease and cancer which are promising. The antioxidants, called catechins, scavenge for free radicals that can damage DNA.

Himalayan salt – This is the “healthy” salt may help prevent acne and tooth decay. This raw, untouched, unprocessed salt contains more than 70 trace minerals which help detoxify the blood and maintain a stable pH balance in cells. And all that for less than 5% of the recommended daily intake for someone on a low-sodium diet.

Holy basil powder - Holy basil powder contains vitamin C, carpteme, calcium and phosphorus which helps the skin stay healthy and supple by protecting it from environmental toxins. It contributes to the health of the throat chest and lungs and protects the respiratory tract and has been used as an anti-inflammatory.

Hydrilla - This plant from Asia, Europe and Africa is hailed for providing increased energy levels, improved immunity, improved digestion, reduced body fat, increased mental clarity, decreased appetite, improved joint, hair, skin and nail health, and an overall increased sense of well-being.

Iron - This ingredient helps to increase your energy levels and your ability to learn. People who consume enough iron tend to have better overall health, less muscle fatigue and more red blood cells.

Kale - Also known as borecole, is one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet. One cup of chopped kale contains 33 calories and 9% of the daily value of calcium, 206% of vitamin A, 134% of vitamin C, and a whopping 684% of vitamin K. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus. Kale’s health benefits are primarily linked to the high concentration and excellent source of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and K -- and sulphur-containing phytonutrients. Carotenoids and flavonoids are the specific types of antioxidants associated with many of the anti-cancer health benefits. Kale is also rich in the eye-health promoting lutein and zeaxanthin compounds.

Lipase - This supplement helps you to lose weight because its a digestive enzyme that helps your body to break down fat.

Luo Han Guo – This is another natural sweeter that is said to be 300 times sweeter than cane sugar and could have a positive impact on coughs and other respiratory ailments. And recent research has revealed that it may work as an antioxidant to help eliminate free radicals that can cause serious health concerns.

Lycium powder – See Goji Berries.

Maca Powder - Maca (Lepidium Meyenii) is a tuberous perennial plant that grows high in the Andean Mountains at altitudes of between 11,000 and 14,000 feet. Color-wise it looks like a potato, but it is shaped like a large radish. Maca is considered by top researchers to be a true Adaptogen. Adaptogens enable the body to enhance its power of resistance and adapt to external conditions. They work with the body's natural systems to help rebuild weak immune systems, re-mineralize poorly nourished bodies, and increase energy and endurance. Scientists and doctors are now finding Maca to be one of the best natural ways to regulate and support endocrine health. This action regulates metabolism, energy levels, growth, sexual development and the sense of well being and attitude. Thankfully, Maca does not contain hormones itself. Instead it provides a unique set of nutrients that directly fuel the endocrine system and help the glands to produce vital hormones in precise dosages predetermined by one's own body. Maca Powder is even used to treat menopausal symptoms (it is now being prescribed by many health practitioners as a safe, effective alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy).

Maitake Mushroom Powder - This ingredient has been shown to regulate blood circulation, reduce blood pressure, improves insulin levels, enhance the immune system and have an anti-tumor/ anti-viral effect.

Moringa – Ingredient rich in Vitamin C, Calcium, Vitamin A, Protein, Potassium and Iron. Moringa has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is known to promote energy, vitality, athletic performance, and weight loss—while boosting the immune system and protecting against disease. There are over 46 antioxidants and 36 anti-inflammatory compounds all naturally occurring in the Moringa plant. That is why it is referred to as the best natural source of anti-oxidants.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) - This ingredient is a naturally occurring sulfur compound. It is known for aiding in joint health and supporting liver detoxification. A medical study done in Portland found that arthritis patients that took MSM reported less pain, stiffness and greater mobility.

Oat Protein - GMO-free oat protein was added to improve texture and mouth feel, while reducing grit.   It is a nutritious protein source that is rich in essential amino acids (including leucine, isoleucine, and lysine) with excellent texture and mouth feel.  Oats are inherently gluten-free, but can be cross-contaminated with small amounts of other grains that contain gluten (including wheat, barley and/or rye) during growing, handling or processing.  As such, as a precaution we recommend that users consult  their  physicians with concerns.

Pantothenic Acid (also known as vitamin B5). This ingredient helps metabolize nutrients, produce vitamin D and stimulate the healing of wounds. Vitamin B5 is critical to the growth of red blood cells as well as sex/ stress-related hormones. This supplement has also gained a lot of press for treating a wide range of skin conditions including acne.

Pea Fiber - It provides one of the highest sources of natural soluble and insoluble dietary fibers known. It has been known to help improve cardiovascular health by reducing cholesterol and stabilizing blood sugar levels by providing steady burning energy.

Pomegranate - Contains antioxidants like polyphenol, tannins, and anthocyanins, which are effective in removing free radicals from our cells. Pomegranate has also been shown to prevent hardening of the arteries by reducing blood vessel damage, and it may even help reverse the progression of these maladies.

PROBIOTIC BLEND:
Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus casei, Streptococcus thermophilus - Since most degenerative disease conditions can be linked to intestinal toxemia and our inability to properly eliminate it from the body, this is blend is useful for a healthy intestinal tract.

PROPRIETARY ENZYME BLEND:
Amylase (See above), Papain, Cellulase, Lactase, Lipase, Protease, Bromelain - These enzymes aid in digestion, reduce heartburn problems, gas and bloating, may also diminish allergies.

Quinoa (sprouted) – It contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it a complete protein source, unusual among plant foods. These proteins are required by the body as building blocks for muscle. Quinoa is an excellent source of potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium (Nature’s medicine for people suffering from Migraines), iron and B vitamins. Excellent for the heart and since they are an insoluble fiber, it helps in gallstone prevention.

Reishi mushroom powder - Known as a "magic plant", this powder has long been used to help increase energy, improve digestion and sleep, strengthen resistance to disease and regulate the immune system. Reishi is used in traditional Chinese medicine, protecting the liver, as an analgesic, antiinflammatory, and anti-cancer treatments.

Rose Hips powder - Rich in vitamin C, rosehips are commonly used for reduction in asthma symptoms and allergies.

Schisandra Powder - Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is an aromatic, woody vine that is native to northern and northeastern China. Schisandra fruit is fully ripened in the fall and appears as numerous spikes of tiny, bright red berries. The berries have sweet, sour, hot, salty, and bitter tastes--hence the Chinese name for schisandra, "Wu Wei Zi" (five-flavored herb). Research has shown that Schisandra has adaptogenic properties, which means that it helps the body to fight disease and adapt to stresses from physical, mental, chemical, and environmental sources. Schisandra also has tonic (restoring tone to tissues), expectorant (promoting the clearing of lung mucus), and cough-suppressant (reducing coughing) activities. It stimulates the nervous system by increasing the speed of nervous responses, leading to quicker and stronger reflexes. Schisandra has been shown to stimulate breathing, decrease blood pressure, act as a vasodilator (causing blood vessels to dilate), improve blood circulation, improve heart function, strengthen uterine contractions, improve vision, normalize blood sugar levels, and assist in food digestion and absorption of nutrients. It can activate all major body systems. In general it works well as a stimulator for the central nervous system, increasing brain efficiency, improved reflexes, and an accelerated rate of endurance.

Spinach powder - Spinach has been used for years to help relieve anemic problems due to its high iron and chlorophyll content.

Spirulina - Type of blue-green algae that is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids (a type of antioxidant that can help protect cells from damage). It contains nutrients, including B complex vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, selenium, and gamma linolenic acid (an essential fatty acid). Amino acids (Proteins Building Blocks) make up 62% of Spirulina. Because it is a rich source of protein and other nutrients, Spirulina has been used traditionally as a nutritional supplement. Spirulina promotes health in many ways. It powerfully protects from oxidant stress and strongly supports the immune system and a healthy inflammatory response.

Sweetened with Stevia - Native to subtropical/tropical South America and Central America, stevia sweetens whatever it is added to without adding calories. Research shows a regulating effect on the pancreas and has been used to help stabilize blood sugar levels, therefore useful to people with diabetes and hypoglycemia. It may lower elevated blood pressure, aids in digestion, reduces gas and stomach acidity. It has been shown to inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay.

Vitamin E - it is a potent anti-oxidant which protects the cells in the human body from free radical damage. Free radical damage can lead to very serious and chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin E also helps to repair the skin, keeping it glowing and healthy.

Whey Protein Isolate - Chocolate Whey, Strawberry and Greenberry flavors. Out of the many protein sources out there, whey protein is the ultimate. It has the highest value in providing branched-chain amino acids, which aid in building and retaining muscle tissue. Each scoop of Shakeology powder contains 15g of whey protein. You can bump this up by making your own recipe and adding things such as peanut butter or additional whey protein powder. Great post from Carl about Whey Protein isolate and how it is right for Shakeology. We Go Both Wheys…

Yacon Root - The Prebiotics in Shakeology are found in the Yacon root. Prebiotics are specific nutrients naturally occurring in whole grains, fruits, legumes, and certain plants. They stimulate the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract, making them either grow or become more active, thereby supporting the healthy regulation of intestinal flora, healthy elimination, and a healthy immune system. When compared to sugar in sweetness, Yacon contains low ratios of simple sugars and calories. It also has a low glycemic index. Yacon is a tasty, potato-like root vegetable found in Peru. Historically, Yacon has been used in South America to lower blood sugar in those with diabetes and improve digestion.

Coach's Corner 3/28/13

My Success is Lasting Change

Tammy and I are currently on a rest week. We just completed 60-days of Les Mills COMBAT and will now be waiting for our free T-shirts. It was a fun time doing Combat and it turned out to be a great maintenance program for us. We started the routine doing the “Warrior” basic program, but at week 5 we wanted more so we switch to the “Ultimate Warrior Hybrid” routine. The more advanced upper & lower body workouts were a bit more like the other “extreme” programs like P90X and Insanity. Now during this time of rest I am looking back over not just the past 60-days, but the past 6 years. What does my success look like? You know… Decide, Commit, Succeed. Some of you know my Journey began late one night back in Nov. 2007. Comforting a newborn late at night I stumbled on a P90X commercial. It was the challenge I needed.

Baby Kensley
I was turning 40 soon and had lost much of my “zing” in life. I was starting to hurt myself trying to be the athlete that I no longer was. Fast forward 6-plus years and I would say that my success was not in pounds lost or even body fat change (although it went from near 20% to 6%), but the success of having stuck with it. I like to say, I Reversed the Trend. I am well into my 40’s and not “Over the Hill” on a coast downward but “Charging the Hill”. So we all measure success in different ways, but I have been very grateful to have found something like Team Beachbody to continue to push and challenge me in both my nutrition and fitness. I do feel like I have come so far. My prayer is that you are also on a similar journey.

Tony Time

Come April 1st it will be back to P90X. We may toss in some Insanity for cardio substitutions every so often, but it will be mostly Tony Horton until July. I like Tony (enough to listen to his jokes over and over) and honestly someday hope we can go skiing together. Along with the workouts we will be looking into Going Vegan, P90X® Style. Our nutrition since the Ultimate Reset in October is still very much plant-based. It has been working for us. Tony has a good article Flexitarian- WHAT DIET IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Lastly on the Tony front, here is The Bring It Minute with Tony Horton to check out.

If you want to join Tammy and I on April 1st with P90X or any other workout we are having people join a closed Facebook group each month as part of the “Beachbody Challenge”. If you want to step up and join us message my or find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jaybbcoach

March Challenge Pack Discount

There are still a few days left in March for the P90X & P90X2 discounts. The pack is Fitness + Nutrition + Support = Success. You receive the P90X or P90X2 fitness program, one of four Shakeology flavors, and a free 30-day trial membership to the Team Beachbody Club. The reduced price is from $205 to $180.

Here are the Links – P90X or P90X2

The Ultimate Reset is also discounted in March by $30. You can reply to me to discuss it this is for you and the different ordering options.

Grand-fathered in

It is time to get locked in on the pricing of the Chocolate and Greenberry Shakeology before the increase on April 1, 2013. Shakeology is increasing by .33 cents a day for the original flavors (Which will match the current pricing of the vegan formulas). When we launched Shakeology gas prices were less than $2... We are paying $4.50 now.. Gas increased 125% and that impacts every raw ingredient price and has resulted in annual shipping rate increases -- but Shakeology's price only increased 8.33% during that same period of time. Good news is that if you on HD now or have an HD order placed before April 1st you are locked in on the current price for life. HD (Home-Direct) orders also get free shipping and handling and can be set on a monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or even semi-annual shipping schedule and also altered anytime. It is only the flavor that has to remain either Chocolate or Greenberry to keep the pricing in tacked. Also the 30-day empty bag money back guarantee still applies. So place order before April 1st even for an order that does not even start shipping until June. Contact me for details.

Wishing Darin Olien was more than a Facebook Friend

Trying not to sound like a Stalker, but it would be great to be super good friends with Darin Olien. When ever I hear him speak or rear anything he wrote, I think,"Man it would great to have dinner with this guy and just chat for hours. I so appreciate his passion for life. With that I wanted to share a post from the Shakeology.com Blog Page

"Why I Created Shakeology"
by Darin Olien

I started formulating Shakeology with some questions. I asked myself many questions such as: "What do most bodies require in this day and age?", "What is not being delivered in food today (even good, organic food)?", "What are the gaps in nutrition that need to be filled for the majority of people?", "What's lacking from the food we eat?"
Darin Olien
The fact is, these days our food is lacking all sorts of nutrients. The nutrient density of our food has continued to plummet as the value of money has trumped the value of quality. It is insane, but true!
The facts are well documented. Pushing farm production has depleted soils. Crops of non-nutritive foods have replaced nutrition-dense foods. Pesticides and genetic modification is wreaking havoc. We're basically putting more food into the pipeline which has less of what we need and more of what we don't need; on a biological level, your body hardly recognizes some of the food you are swallowing.
So ask yourself, how do you expect your body to live tirelessly, vibrantly, with the power to defend itself from disease if what is being fed to it is like putting dirty gas in the tank of a Ferrari?
Darin Olien
Shakeology is the equivalent of a super-charged multi-vitamin and protein-rich health smoothie. When choosing what ingredients were to make up Shakeology, my main deciding factor was the level of every body's' need for vital ingredients that most likely are missing from the average diet. They are as follows:
  • 1. Whole Foods: So many supplements on the market are just fragmentations of the complete matrix of real food. Think of it like taking the most popular scene from a two hour movie and calling that the movie. It's incomplete without the character development, plot, and nuance that make it a holistic experience. The same goes with food. On a biological level, your body needs the whole "movie" to get the complete benefit of the vitamin or mineral that is the star. You just cannot replace or re-engineer the incredible balance and creation of whole foods. So we selected high quality, potent foods, herbs, grasses and ingredients, and processed them minimally to preserve the integrity, phytochemicals, natural vitamins, minerals, alkaloids, phytosterols, etc.
  • 2. Vitamins and Minerals: We included quality nutrition from potent and varying whole-food sources. ("Nutrition, right off the vine" as I like to call it) And then we backed that up by adding in a well-balanced vitamin and mineral profile since whole-foods fluctuate from crop to crop.
  • 3. Enzymes: Since enzymes flood the food only in the last days of ripening, enzyme supplementation is critical for the majority of people. Even if you eat all raw foods the enzymes are still low. And cooked food has ZERO active enzymes! A very quick note…why Enzymes? They have been called "The Fountain of Life!" They are behind EVERY single process in the body! Yes, EVERTHING requires enzymes! The labor force of the body that digests, absorbs, allow for signals to be sent, creates new blood cells, etc are all governed by enzymes. You would be shocked at how starved your body has been for enzyme support. That's why the addition of these vital forces to Shakeology was so critical!
  • 4. Prebiotics and Probiotics: We've all heard about foods with additive probiotics, like yogurts for instance. Did you know that your body can actually manifest its own probiotics if you feed it prebiotics? With the way people eat today they have created thriving environments for unhealthy bacteria in the body. This has created all sorts of debilitating breakdowns and is the foundation for physical and emotional fatigue. The prebiotics of the amazing Yacon Root in Shakeology is food for the "healthy" bacteria, and in turn, it creates an environment for healthy probiotics to flourish. By getting our internal 'ecosystem' in balance, you have the potential for a vibrant, thriving body and life!
  • 5. MSM- (Methylsulfonylmethane): MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in fresh, raw fruits, vegetables, milk, fish, and grains. But within hours of harvest, MSM changes and is virtually gone. That's why it is very difficult to get MSM naturally, because where ancient man ate what he picked almost instantly, today it is picked, processed and packaged months before it hits the table. Why is it important? MSM is critical to the connective tissue and the fluidity (or space) between cells! MSM gives them "room to breathe". When the body becomes very ridged, tight, painful and stiff, often times MSM is at very low quantities in the body. Since we are not eating our own foods immediately after harvesting we must supplement this vital component or the body has a hard time staying healthy and flexible on a cellular level, which translates throughout the body on a bio-mechanical level as well.
If we want our health to improve, we need to be aware so we can choose differently! So this is why I created Shakeology- it's my intention to fulfill the deep desire of EVERY body's need to be fed more nutrition.

To that I (Jay) say, Thanks "Buddy" keep up the good work!

Getting & Staying Health with Nutrition

It has truly been great for my wife and I for the past four years to Beachbody in our lives. It really has reversed the clock for both of us. Through the years we have learned more and more about our nutrition and the great importance it is to fuel our bodies correctly. I do not know where each of you is in your journey toward better health, but it seems we all want to feel better. We like to go about this as naturally as possible and want to share information on a how we get a large about of what now are called super foods. Do your research.

You may have already heard me rant amount the good fitness being a combination of proper exercise, nutrition and rest. Without each of these the time spent in others can be not as productive. So no matter if you are doing P90X, Insanity or any other exercise regime, without proper nutrition you are honestly doing yourself a disservice. Tammy and I believe Shakeology is the best nutritional product on the market, but there are others. I have a blog post (The Nutrition side of being Fit) that details all the products I have tried.

Even if you are familiar with Shakeology and even already using it here is some great information that explains why we are so happy with it. (contact me for a free sample to try)

10 Superfoods in Shakeology

As I have stated many times here Shakeology is one of the best drinks you can put into your body. Recently Dr Perricone posted an article on the top 10 superfoods, which all by the way are contained in Shakeology.
Chocolate ingredients
Greenberry ingredients
Also see my post Spotlighting some of the 70 ingredients in Shakeology

The article is posted below (Link: Dr. Perricone's 10 Superfoods)

Of course, there are more than just 10 “superfoods.” In fact, just about every brightly colored fruit and vegetable fits the category of a superfood, as do nuts, beans, seeds and aromatic and brightly colored herbs and spices. The beneficial properties of each one of these superfoods could fill an entire book. The 10 featured here were chosen because of their direct link to the Brain-Beauty Connection. These foods (listed here in alphabetical order) are rich in either the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), antioxidants or fiber, and as in the case of açaí—all three! In addition, we have included foods that have been proven to lower or help regulate blood sugar levels—an extremely important factor for all of those concerned with slowing the aging process and preventing diabetes, obesity, wrinkles and a host of degenerative diseases.

Health Benefits
Although many of these foods have reported medical benefits, remember at all times that if you have any type of health problem or physical symptom, do not self-diagnose or self-medicate—even if with a food or herb. Trust your medical professional first and foremost in this department. However, the 10 foods included here do have incredible health benefits. Listed below are just some of the reasons to include these foods in your diet—every day:

* Prevent or reduce inflammation
* Help regulate metabolism and burn body fat
* Lower total cholesterol
* Lower blood pressure
* Help protect against heart disease
* Help protect against cancer

Special Spot light on Chlorella

Chlorella in Shakeology – 350 mg.

What is Chlorella?

Chlorella is a type of single-celled green algae, belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta.
Chlorella contains the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll A and B, enabling it to photosynthesize (derive energy by converting sunlight and carbon dioxide into sugar molecules for food). This ability gives it its namesake, which derives from the Greek chloros, meaning ‘green’ and the Latin ñella, meaning ‘small’.

Chlorella can grow rapidly where there is high nitrate and phosphate levels or direct sunlight, as it needs only light, water, CO2, and a few trace minerals to reproduce.

Chlorella was discovered in the late 19th century. Due to its high protein concentration and rapid growth rate, Chlorella was investigated after World War II as a possible commercial food source.

Chlorella Nutrition Information

Chlorella is considered by many to be a superfood. When dried, it is about 45% protein, 20% fat, 20% carbohydrate, 5% fiber, and 10% minerals and vitamins, making it an excellent source of nutrition. It contains ample amounts of potassium, all of the B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and iron, beta carotene and lutein.

Chlorella Health Benefits

In its natural form, Chlorella has been found to have anti-tumor properties when fed to mice, and likewise enhanced vascular function in hypertensive rats. Chlorella also contains vitamin C and carotenoids, both of which are antioxidants- compounds that block the action of free radicals and their potential cancer-causing disruption of cells.

Several studies suggest that Chlorella supplementation even has a positive effect on the reduction of dioxin levels in breast milk and it may also have beneficial effects on nursing infants by increasing the levels of antibody IgA, which helps an infant’s immune system develop, in breast milk.

Chorella’s presence in the stomach and digestive tract can increase good bacteria in the intestine in order to help treat ulcers, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and diverticulosis.

Other key digestive support ingredients in Shakeology -
Blue Green Algae - This power packed nutrient can help to increase energy, improve memory, increase mental clarity, improve digestion, control cravings, heighten immune function, help relieve fatigue, PMS, anxiety and depression. It's even recently been called a cure for ADD.

And while it’s not technically a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, while the amount of fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids in flax leaves grains in the dust. Additionally, flax seed is very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people who limit their intake of starches and sugars. Its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it a great food for weight loss and maintenance -- many dieters have found that flax seed has been a key to keeping them feeling satisfied.

Schisandra Powder - Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is an aromatic, woody vine that is native to northern and northeastern China. Schisandra fruit is fully ripened in the fall and appears as numerous spikes of tiny, bright red berries. The berries have sweet, sour, hot, salty, and bitter tastes.

Wheat grass - high in calcium, magnesium and potassium. Studies have shown it to have cleansing, detoxifying and healing effects on your body. Recommended as a way to stimulate metabolism, wheat grass can be helpful in correcting obesity and indigestion.

Shakeology:
Shakeology has been 2 years in development and considered the healthiest meal of the day. It only has 120 calories per serving, containing over 80 beneficial ingredients and having a certified low glycemic index of 24. They whey protein used in shakeology is free of hormones and anti-biotics. The ingredients and finished product have been tested for heavy metals, micro-biologicals and pesticides. It contains such nutritional herbs like Acai, Goji berries, Camu-Camu, Quinoa, Wheatgrass, Maca root and Sacha inchi. Beachbody has sourced and purchased Peruvian herbs that have been hand picked selected by our own "Ingredient Hunter" Darin Olien. The Sacha inchi herb is a type of peruvian peanut that is high in protein, omega-3 and is easy to absorb by your body. The Maca root is used to balance your hormones, support energy and stamina and reduce anxiety and stress. The Maca root is a difficult herb to harvest due to that fact that it can only be harvested once every 9 years per crop. The Yacon root is a low calorie sweet herb that is used for its prebiotic properties and supports digestive health. For more info on Shakeology click below.

The Nutrition side of being Fit

Tammy and I put great importance in what we use to fuel our bodies. I do not know where each of you is in your “journey” toward better health, but it seems we all want to feel better. We like to go about this as naturally as possible and want to share information on a how we get a large about of what now are called “super foods”. Do your research.

You may have already heard me “rant” amount the good fitness being a combination of proper exercise, nutrition and rest. Without each of these the time spent in others can be not as productive. So no matter if you are doing P90X, Insanity or any other exercise regime, without proper nutrition you are honestly doing yourself a disservice. Tammy and I believe Shakeology is the best nutritional product on the market, but there are others. While not as complete Sequel Naturals produces Vega Health Optimizer. I have tried for weeks to get a sample and I may finally get on soon they say. (Their number is 1-866-839-8863) we will see if it tastes any good. You can purchase Vega at the Whole Foods (or at New Moon for the Truckee locals). Shakeology Ingredients PDF can be found at the bottom of the Shakeology page.

I received the samples since writing the above paragraph; they are Vega "Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer" flavors Natural, Vanilla Chai & Berry. I started by trying the Natural flavor using 12oz. of Fat Free Milk and 6oz. of Ice. It tasted very poor to me, almost "fishy". Added some frozen blueberries, which did not help. I was going back-and-forth on whether to finish it. In the end I dump more than 1/2 down the Drain. I am mostly sad about the Blueberries wasted. Few days later I tried the Vanilla Chai flavor and it was ok, at least I did not have to dump it. The Chai aroma was nice but a bad after taste was hardly worth it. Today I tried the Berry flavor and again nice aroma, not so much on the flavor. It has hard to get it all down... but it's good for you, right? They did not send a Chocolate sample for some reason. While I am not a huge "Must have Chocolate" guy I would have thought that would be their best, but maybe not.

Another option, while again not nearly as complete as Shakeology, is a Rainbow light product called Protein Energizer™ Whey (you can also find links to the Acai, Chocolate and Vanilla flavors.) I should be receiving samples soon from Rainbow Light. (update: The sample tasted pretty bad, but could choke them down, not something I would want to use on a regular bases)

Even if you are familiar with Shakeology and even using it here is some great information that explains why we are so happy with it.

Chocolate Shakeology® Pie! (updated for coconut option)

Finally found a recipe for this pie. (Thanks Brian Hin) It's very easy and fast to make and has all of the nutritional value of Shakeology® and then some! :)

. 1-1/2 scoops Chocolate Shakeology
. 1/2 cup unsweetened peanut butter
. 1 container silken tofu (12 oz.) {my Container was 16oz.}
. 2 Tbsp. soy milk
. 2 Tbsp. agave nectar (or maple syrup)
. 1 "Healthy" graham cracker pie crust (recipe below)

(Edit: Recently saw a similar Recipe with more Peanut butter [1 cup] & the addition of 1 cup of reduced fat / unsweetened shredded coconut for topping. Additionally the Whole Wheat Graham cracker crust was basted with one egg white before baking crust in oven)

Ingredients ready with food Processor

Blend or food-process peanut butter, tofu, Shakeology, soy milk, and agave nectar until smooth and creamy, adding more soy milk if necessary. Pour into pie crust and refrigerate until firm (about 1 hour). Serves 8.

After you blend ingredients together just pour it into pie crust

Above picture is a regular crust w/ Butter that I made.

(Update: the above crust held up much better, although not as healthy)

My new "Healthy" Crust recipe is this:
(Crust did not firm-up like I would have liked; may have to go back to the Crust with butter, at least the filling is super healthy)
. 1-1/2 cups graham cracker (I used 12 sheets)
. 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa
. 1/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt
. 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
Bake at 350°F for 10 min.

Refrigerate until firm and then serve!!

Preparation Time: 10 minutes, plus 60 minutes refrigeration time

(True Confession: if you really want it as a Substitute Dessert top it with a small amount of real whipped cream; not included in Calorie counts below ... but sometimes I am worth it)

Shakeology® and P90X®

By Steve Edwards

Can Shakeology replace one of my meals in the P90X nutrition plan?

I'd hope so, given that it's a meal replacement shake! [laughs] But seriously, Xers do have a different nutritional equation to consider than most people. Generally, meal replacement shakes are designed so that you drink them instead of eating a meal to help you lose weight. Of course, Shakeology fits into this mold just fine. In fact, given how nutrient-dense it is, I'd say it's better than anything on the market. And even though it contains an entire day's worth of many nutrients, it's still only 140 calories.

Aren't most of the meals in P90X nutrition plan in the 400 to 500 calorie range?

Exactly, and the average Xer won't be served well to cut out calories. The reason is that as you get fitter your nutritional requirements change, along with your body composition. When you first start to exercise, you can lose weight by just restricting your caloric intake. But as you gain muscle, you need to eat more to continue losing weight, and this is often a lot more than you ate when you first began losing weight—sometimes it's more than double. If you eat too little during P90X, your weight loss will plateau, along with your ability to do the workouts.

This is why we give you a lot of smoothie recipes and options. Shakeology, like any other meal replacement shake, can be a component of something larger. For meals, we suggest adding more calories from healthy fat sources, like nut butters (almonds, cashews, etc.), along with more standard smoothie-like ingredients such as fruit. This not only brings your calories into line with your diet plan but balances meals so they digest more slowly, as normal meals would.

Can Shakeology replace one of the snacks in the P90X nutrition plan?

Shakeology is a ridiculously nutrient-rich snack, a perfect snack for Xers. Because it doesn't have much fat, its nutrients are put to use very quickly by your body. This makes it an ideal pick-me-up snack when you're on the go. It's better, in fact, than a lot of energy drinks. While something like Red Bull might give you more up-front punch, Shakeology will give you sustained energy because it's providing nutrients your body needs to get things done.

Shakeology's macronutrient ratio splits the difference among sports drink, protein shake, and recovery drink, but it can substitute for all of them in any given situation because it also has an excellent micronutrient profile. Most people are focused only on macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbs), but they're only part of your nutritional equation. Micronutrients are things like phytonutrients, adaptogens, and other scientific-sounding stuff. While we refer to these as "micro," nutritionally, they are anything but small. Many of them are absolutely essential for a healthy life. Shakeology speeds these micronutrients into your system, which enables you to perform better.

Why don't we hear more about the importance of micronutrients?

Not to dwell too much on conspiracy theories, but "big food," as we call the American food industry, doesn't want us focusing on micronutrients because they've been destroyed in most of the foods we eat. Things like food processing and pasteurization kill most of the micronutrients in food. These processed foods are then sprinkled with what have been lobbied to be "important" ingredients, which in reality only provide enough nutrition for surviving, as opposed to thriving. As you can observe by watching society grow larger, this is leading to all sorts of problems.

In nature, food doesn't come this way. It has a balance of nutrients that help sustain life. It's possible for food scientists to recreate this balance in processed foods, but this is expensive. Essentially, if it doesn't fit the numbers, shareholders want to see it doesn't happen. So they make cheap food and keep us in the dark about nutrition. This is exactly why we're in the predicament we're in today (with obesity), because we can make calorie-rich but nutrient-poor food cheaper than we can produce natural food.

This is why Shakeology is designed the way it is. There is no one food in nature that has all the micronutrients we need to fill the nutritional gaps in our diets—that's why we need to eat a variety of foods. But most of us don't do that. So at its core, this is what Shakeology is doing—filling in our nutritional gaps.

I'm doing the Portion Approach in P90X. What block(s) could Shakeology replace?

The portion plan is basically little chunks of macronutrients portioned out to help you easily balance your diet. Shakeology is equal parts carbs and protein, with almost no fat. So Shakeology can replace one block of protein and one block of carbs.

Can Shakeology substitute for Results and Recovery Formula?

It's not an exact swap, but you could do a lot worse. When you're training very hard, like those times when your body is shaking during, say, P90X Chest & Back, Results and Recovery Formula is better because your body is bonking—essentially out of glycogen, or blood sugar. Any time you're in this state, the quicker you can recharge your glycogen, the less damage you'll do to your muscle cells, and hence, the faster you'll recover. It's the one and only time sugar is a preferred nutrient in your diet.

Shakeology doesn't have nearly as much sugar as Results and Recovery Formula. It only has a little for nutrient transport. But because its other ingredients also support your digestive process, you have rapid assimilation of nutrients. The science from the '90s showing that a small amount of protein can "piggyback" sugar and be put to use more rapidly, during or after exercise, holds true for Shakeology. It's not as effective as a Results and Recovery Formula for your hardest workouts, but at any other time, it's pretty darn good.

How about as a protein shake?

Shakeology has an ample amount of protein. While many protein shakes on the market may have more grams of protein, the type of protein they use often digests so slowly that you can't drink them when you're active. Shakeology uses whey protein, which is one of the most (if not the most) bioavailable sources of protein. That means it absorbs quicker into the system than other proteins. Most proteins, especially when you get them in a whole food, take forever to digest. This means that eating protein right before, during, or right after exercise is generally a waste because your body is using energy to digest something that won't help you for hours, energy that it could be using to enhance your workout or recovery. But when you combine whey protein along with Shakeology's other nutrients, you have a high-protein shake that can fit into many different nutritional slots in your day, something lacking in a standard protein drink.

Should I still bother taking P90X Peak Health Formula or ActiVit Multivitamins if I'm drinking Shakeology every day?

We get the vitamin question a lot because Shakeology has so many vitamins in it already. However, using my above example of processed foods, most of us only get a fraction of the nutrients that we should consume on any given day, even when we're eating more calories than we should. This is exactly why we have vitamin supplements in the first place. Throw exercise into the equation, which accelerates your body's usage of nutrients, and you can see why we recommend so many times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for certain vitamins and minerals.

For an average person, Shakeology might eliminate the need for a multivitamin. But if you remember that movie Supersize Me, the average American takes about 600 steps a day—which isn't even your warm-up for a P90X workout! No one doing a Beachbody program is average. Xers, especially, are advised to take additional vitamin supplements.

It's also great to take your supplements along with Shakeology because they will digest more easily. One of the limiting factors with supplements is how well your body can assimilate them, so adding them to something that you know is broken down easily by your digestive system is a plus.

It's important to mention two other variables here as well. First, many—if not most—of our customers are trying to lose weight. This requires reducing caloric intake while adding exercise, which increases nutrient requirements. Starting to see an equation where multivitamins and supplements make sense? The body can be a complex organism, but this comes down to simple math. The key to losing weight is not just about reducing calories; it's about finding a way to reduce your caloric intake and still get enough nutrients to keep you body functioning at its highest level. The key to doing this is to seek out nutrient-dense foods. As I said before, you'd be hard-pressed to find something as nutrient-dense as Shakeology.

Then there's the RDA, which is the "recommended daily allowance" for everybody. Imagine one nutritional number for every person on the planet, from a 100-pound computer programmer who sits all day to a 350-pound NFL lineman. How absurd is that? Anybody who is doing P90X is no longer an average individual. So chances are the RDA won't fit the bill if you want your body to perform as well as it can.

When's the best time to drink Shakeology during a P90X day?

One of the beautiful things about Shakeology is how versatile it is. Because it helps you digest anything you consume along with it, there isn't really a wrong time to have it. Ideally, its best slot in an Xer's day is as a pre-workout snack, taken about 1 hour prior to your warm-up. Your impending workout will help you get the most out of Shakeology and it will help you during the latter part of your workout, especially if your glycogen stores are slightly depleted. It can be effective pre-workout, post-workout, or any time during the day when your energy is flagging and you need a pick-me-up. Or you can make smoothies and simply replace your meals. You basically can't go wrong.

Is there anything else you'd like to add about Shakeology?

Price holds a lot of people back, and I can understand that it looks expensive on the surface. We tend to look at foods in a cost-to-calorie ratio, instead of a cost-to-nutrient ratio. Sure, you can buy a Big Gulp and you get 800 calories for a dollar (or something like that). But what good are they? There are no micronutrients. It's man-made sugar, chemicals, and by-products of genetically modified corn and soy production—no nutrition whatsoever. Whereas if you tried to find all the nutrients in Shakeology, you'd spend forty bucks.

If you're serious about your health, you should consider what you spend your money on. People drop three to four bucks a day on things that are a detriment to their health without batting an eye. We're talking the price of a latte or smoothie or any number of things that are much worse than that. The consumer is at war with a lot of corporations that are trying to poison them to make a quick buck. The obesity trend will only stop when we take some responsibility for our health and begin to make better food choices.
